17-19 Gipps Street East Melbourne is an astonishing apartment building that will combine above ground and subterranean floor levels. This is an example of a new design trend known as Iceberg Apartments, specifically utilised in densely populated and height restricted inner city locations.
This unique project will retain the existing heritage building envelope whilst removing and then reinstating all the interior structure. Perimeter site excavation will create 2 levels of living underground, linked to the skies via strategically placed light courts. It is the most complex design under taken by Canny Architecture.
The four luxury apartments, ranging in size from 220m2 to 322m2, have had planning approval and are due for completion in November 2017. The project client is Cranecorp.
